Head Gasket Repair Cost UK: How to Tell It's the Gasket Before You Spend a Fortune

5 min read

A falling coolant level, white smoke or an overheating warning can point to a head gasket problem. They can also have other causes. Get the fault properly tested before agreeing to a major repair or deciding whether to keep the car.

What Does a Head Gasket Do?

The head gasket seals the join between the cylinder head and the engine block. It keeps combustion pressure, coolant and engine oil in separate passages.

That position explains why a failed gasket can cause several different symptoms. It may let combustion gases enter the cooling system, coolant enter a cylinder, or oil and coolant mix. A cracked cylinder head or other cooling-system fault can produce similar signs.

Head Gasket Symptoms to Check

No single symptom confirms a failed gasket. Look for a combination of these signs:

  • Coolant loss with no visible leak: Coolant may be entering a cylinder or mixing with oil.

  • White, sweet-smelling exhaust smoke: Persistent smoke once the engine is warm can indicate coolant burning in a cylinder. White smoke from a diesel can have other causes too.

  • Overheating: A leak can affect cooling-system pressure and circulation.

  • Cold air from the heater: Low coolant or air in the system can stop the heater working properly.

  • Mayo-like residue under the oil filler cap: Coolant contamination is one possibility. Short trips can also cause condensation, so this sign alone is not proof.

  • Oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil: Cross-contamination needs prompt investigation.

  • Misfire or loss of power: Coolant in a cylinder or reduced compression can affect combustion.

  • Bubbles or exhaust gas in the coolant: Combustion gases may be entering the cooling system.

  • A pressurised system that pushes coolant out: Pressure can build when gases leak into the coolant passages.

Coolant entering a cylinder can cause a misfire. In severe cases, liquid can prevent the piston from moving, creating hydraulic lock and serious engine damage.

Test Before Replacing Parts

A diagnosis of “head gasket, £1,500” without supporting tests is not enough. Several faults can mimic gasket failure, including a thermostat, water pump, radiator, hose, cracked cylinder head, leaking inlet manifold gasket or, on some diesels, a failed EGR cooler. A leaking turbo can also cause coolant loss on some engine designs.

A garage should select tests based on the symptoms and vehicle. These can include:

  • Cooling-system pressure test to check whether pressure drops and help locate leaks.

  • Chemical test for combustion gases in the coolant to detect exhaust gas in the cooling system.

  • Compression test to compare cylinder pressures.

  • Cylinder leak-down test to identify where pressure escapes.

No single test tells the whole story in every case. A positive combustion-gas test, for example, indicates gas entering the coolant but does not by itself distinguish a gasket failure from a cracked head or a failed EGR cooler. Further inspection may be needed.

Head Gasket Repair Cost UK

UK guides put many head gasket repairs in a broad range of around £500 to £2,000 or more. This is a general trade estimate, not an AutoWorkz price or a guaranteed quote. RAC’s 2026 guide reports an average of £633, but the price for an individual vehicle can differ substantially depending on what the work includes and what testing finds. Read the RAC head gasket guide.

The final cost depends on:

  • Vehicle make, model and engine layout

  • Whether the cylinder head needs skimming or replacing

  • Whether the head is cracked

  • Damage to the engine block or liners

  • Whether overheating has warped other components

  • Whether the engine must be removed for access

  • Parts, head bolts, oil and coolant

  • Whether a timing belt or chain and water pump are due while the engine is apart

Some diesel repairs can be larger or more involved than petrol jobs. The vehicle must be inspected first. AutoWorkz quotes per vehicle after assessment.

When Is the Repair Worth It?

Compare the full written quote with the car’s value, condition and likely future repairs. A well-maintained car with a clean body and a good service history may justify the work. An older vehicle with corrosion or other major faults may not.

There is no universal rule. The decision should account for the confirmed cause, any damage found, and the condition of the rest of the vehicle. AutoWorkz will explain the findings and be straight if the numbers do not add up.

Replace Related Parts While It’s Apart

If the timing belt or chain needs to be removed for access, and replacement is due, doing it during the head gasket repair can avoid paying the overlapping labour again later. The same applies to a water pump where the vehicle’s layout and condition make replacement appropriate.

Check the service history and the manufacturer’s interval. See timing chain, cambelt and engine repair services when planning related work.

What to Ask Before Approving a Quote

Ask the garage:

  • Is the cylinder head being skimmed or replaced?

  • Are new head bolts included?

  • Are the timing belt or chain and water pump included if they are due?

  • Are fresh oil and coolant included?

  • Is the figure fixed or an estimate pending inspection?

  • What happens if the head is cracked or the block is damaged?

Get any additional work and costs agreed before it goes ahead.

Engine Repairs in Yaxley and Peterborough

AutoWorkz has been established since 2007, with 18 years of experience, and is a Trust My Garage member. Head gasket repairs, engine repairs and rebuilds are completed in-house, alongside cambelt and timing chain replacement, turbo and injector work, servicing, and steel and aluminium welding. MOTs are completed off site.

That is the practical difference between a full service centre and a tuning-only operation. Mechanical repairs are handled as mechanical repairs. For separate performance enquiries, see ECU remapping information and the 2025 dyno and rolling road facility.

Stop Driving if the Engine Overheats

If the temperature gauge climbs or a warning appears, stop safely and switch off the engine. Do not continue driving on a suspected failed gasket; overheating can warp the head or cause more extensive engine damage. Never open a hot, pressurised coolant cap. Arrange recovery and diagnosis.

Head Gasket Repair FAQs

How much does a head gasket repair cost in the UK?

A broad UK guide price is around £500 to £2,000 or more, depending on the vehicle, access, machining and any additional damage. It is not a guaranteed price. AutoWorkz inspects the vehicle and quotes for the specific job.

How long does the repair take?

Typically several days, depending on the vehicle, parts availability, inspection and any machining required. The expected timescale is confirmed at booking.

Can I drive with a blown head gasket?

No. Continuing to drive can cause overheating and further engine damage. Stop safely, switch off and arrange recovery.

Can a head gasket repair fail?

Yes. If a warped or cracked head is not identified and machined or replaced as required, the repair can fail. Testing and inspection matter.

Does a head gasket repair come with a warranty?

Warranty terms depend on the work and parts used. Ask for the applicable coverage to be confirmed in writing with the quote.
